pagodas (AnGiang & KienGiang province), and the huge U-Minh mangrove forest (CaMau province). Furthermore, HaTien and PhuQuoc Island (KienGiang province) offer nice beaches for relaxing throughout the year.

Tam Nong National Park (Vuon Quoc Gia Tram Chim), located in TamNong district, in DongThap province, covers 8,000 ha and 53 km in paths.

In this park, visitors can observe red-headed cranes (grus antigone sharpii), one of 15 endangered species of cranes in the world. Over 220 species of birds have been identified within the park, but ornithologists will be particularly interested in the rare red-headed cranes, which grow to over 1.5m high.

In fact, cranes have played an important role in history. Thousands of years BC, images of cranes were used in interior decoration in European aristocratic families. In the Orient, cranes were and are still worshipped as examples of faithfulness and national longevity. Different from any other species of birds in the area, cranes find their food only on land; they must therefore migrate to avoid the rainy season in DongThapMuoi. The cranes nest here from December to June.

Ancient City of Oc-Eo

Oc-Eo was a major trading city during the 1st to 6th centuries AD, when this area was ruled by the Indian influenced empire of Funan. Much of what is known about Funan, which reached its height in the 5th century AD, comes from contemporary Chinese sources and the archaeological excavations at Oc-Eo. The excavations have uncovered evidence of significant contact between Oc-Eo and what is now Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, as well as Persia and even the Roman Empire. Artifacts found at Oc-Eo are on display in HCM city at the History and Art museum, in Hanoi at the History museum, and in LongXuyen at AnGiang museum.

HaTien’s Beauty.

Ha Tien is such a delightful location that a French film company chose it to produce the movie "L'amant" (The Lover) in 1995. There are several attractions in the area: Thach Dong stone grotto, a piece of green stone emerging from the ground; Hon PhuTu - Father and Son islet which lie approximately 100 m offshore; and Hang pagoda. The area is known for its production of seafood, black pepper and items made from the shells of sea turtles. All around the area are lovely, towering limestone formations that give this place a very different appearance from the rest of the Mekong Delta.

PhuQuoc, the largest island in Vietnam, lies in the Gulf of Thailand, 45 km from HaTien and 15 km south of the coast of Cambodia. PhuQuoc island, is also part of an archipelago consisting of 22 islands of all sizes. The island covers an area of 585 km2 and is 50 km long.

The population underwent a sudden increase in the last twenty years; there are 55,000 people inhabiting the island now whereas there were no more than 5,000 people in 1975.

PhuQuoc is also called the Emerald Island because of its natural treasures and infinite tourism potential. The island is well known for its high-quality fish sauce; PhuQuoc fish sauce smells particularly good since it is made from a small fish – “CaCom”, with a high level of protein. The island produces 6 million liters of fish sauce every year.

PhuQuoc island has many harbors such as AnThoi and HonThom where international and domestic ships anchor. Also, there are several historical sites on the island: National Hero NguyenTrungTruc's military base, Gia Long King relics from the time he spent on the island, and PhuQuoc prison.

Off the coast of the island emerges a group of 105 islands of all sizes. Some of them are densely inhabited such as HonTre and KienHai, 25 km from RachGia. Visitors can spend time on the beach or hike in the forest on island recently recognized by UNESCO as The World's Bio Sphere Reserve.
